ResumoSatellite observations provide outstanding cover of wide areas in different temporal and spatial resolutions. Based on these observations it is possible to estimate rainfall, using algorithms that turn cloud or raindrop radiance (emitted or reflected) observed by the satellites into precipitation rates. Warm clouds can significantly contribute to the total of rainfall in tropical regions and efforts must be done in order to include its quantification in the algorithms assessments. The majority of algorithms (using microwave or passive microwave) are not able to quantify rainfall originated from warm clouds, which causes significant uncertainties in the rainfall estimation. To address this problem a series of field experiment has been planned to be carried out over Brazil and all measurements made in this experiment will be used to improve satellite rainfall algorithms and/or develop new ones able to identify and estimate warm rain. The experiments will focus on warm rain observed in different parts of the country whose climate regime ranges from middle latitude to tropical humid and semi arid. The first experiment, called PRE-CHUVA and carried out during the period 01-25 of March, 2010 over the tropical site of Alcântara, Brazil (latitude -2.1325 and longitude -44.1424), used a number of instruments like laser (Thies and Parsivel) and impact (Joss-Waldvogel) disdrometers, rain gauges, X band dual pol radar, multi-channel ground radiometers (ADMIRARI nad Radiometrics GT 3000), LIDAR, aircraft cloud microphysics measurements and radiosondes to quantify the observed precipitation during the study period. The three types of disdrometers were collocated together with rain-gauges in two different sites along a single radar ray. During the study period several rain events were registered and according to radar measurements they were originated form both warm and cold clouds. Preliminary investigations on the measurements acquired by the disdrometers, rain gauges and radar revealed different performance of the instruments in each site. For all rain events the comparison of rain rates observed by the disdrometers showed that Thies and Parsivel overestimate rainfall when compared with Joss-Waldvogel. The correlation among these instrument intercomparison show higher values for the pair Thies x Joss-Waldvogel, however the scatter plot shows better agreement for the pair Parsivel x Joss-Waldvogel. Rainfall amount observed by the gauges and compared with the disdrometers revealed more similarities with Thies measurements; however difference between gauges observations in the same site was realized. Radar reflectivities (Z) assessed by the disdrometers and compared with the radar measurements also revealed different results for the three instruments. But the results can be masked once calibration problems were identified in the radar measurements.
